Feudal Japan is from Yagyu Jubei dies, actually. There's a bit of New Rashomon Kyomu Senki in Heian-Kyo and a few scenes taken from Makuu Hakkenden, though.

It's not really just the fact that it's different. There's a lot of reasons I don't like it. It focuses on characters that are ultimately either completely irrelevant and/or cannon fodder. It's needlessly bleak in that the protagonists either don't win or they have a pyrric victory. Getter Robo Go is so pathetic that Ishikawa had to introduce Shin Getter in order for the fact that the story had Getter machines to matter at all. I enjoyed the parts with Hayato and NISAR, but that's about it. Shin vs Neo handled the general concepts and characters of Go much better than Go itself.

I've watched it twice, and there were a few things I didn't like with it (Armageddon has its own problems, but that's another story). The focus on Ryoma can be a bit much, especially given that Hayato made such an entrance, only to stop being crazy after he starts piloting Getter 2. He could have been highly intelligent and with a tinge of crazy throughout the show, but alas no. The time travel arcs did also break the pace of the show. Finally, I'm not a big fan of the intro song, but that's just a minor nitpick.

Heats is amazing on the first and second listen but just okay afterwards.

NGR is most definitely not a substitute for the original manga because it's an anthology compilation of scenes from various Getter and Ishikawa manga with somewhat different characters. I don't think the final fight is even taken directly from anything Ishikawa because I think the four gods are supposed to be good guys in the Void Chronicles.

Venger Robo certainly didn't have problems in that area and Go was originally serialized in a shonen magazine to go with the Toei anime - basically, it was intended for both kids who certainly wouldn't be familiar with either Toei Getter or the original manga and for older Getter fans. Not like Ryoma or Hayato had any deep characterization in the 70s that couldn't be summarized with "shit went down at Saotome labs 15 years ago and now we're all in this fucking mess"
