I think it was played (sorta) seriously. At the time (and to an extent still) there was a lot of racism against black folks, especially Afro-Japanese children of black American servicemen and Japanese mothers. The episode touched on the social prejudice a lot of those kids faced growing up, which was kind of forward-thinking for its day. But yes indeed, Jun is just the right kind of delicious brown.

I don't think it's fair to call Toei Mazinger (I've only seen the first one since it's the only one translated well) stupid shit, especially in comparison to everything else there was at the time. I mean, that was even a few years before the first Mobile Suit Gundam, so stuff was pretty silly back then.

Even with the silliness, which varied from episode to episode, there was a lot of good, serious stuff. Not like, broke down crying good stuff, but a few very well done standout episodes that go way beyond what it could be if it was a bit lazier. I mean, you've got to at least feel bad about Ashura and Morimori , right?
