They did PLAY Gunpla Battle and were good at it, but they played on level C where the models wouldn't be damaged, and they did not play at the national level.

Moreover, while you can make a gorgeous gunpla that's a glorified statue and win an Artistic Grand Prix, tournament-grade gunpla have to be built as combat machines, with particle storage, durability, and competitive gimmicks in mind. They can be pretty too, but they can't just be 'pure art'.
