Compared to things like the RX-79[g], Unicorn, Nu, Strike, etc the Zeta and ZZ look pretty different design-wise. They still get the parade colors that Tomino never wanted on the RX-78 though.

I agree that the design of the Zeta itself is about as different from the original Gundam as the Turn-A is. I don't think it's all that different though at the end of the day, and really, it's just a refinement of the original's aesthetic to look more modern. It certainly wasn't doing any thing to fundamentally change the design. And that was something Tomino himself chose from what I gather, over units like the Hyaku Shiki that Nagano had drawn. Not that the Hyaku Shiki is massively different either, but the point is more that Tomino picked the Zeta design to be the lead one.

G and Wing were developed right on top of each other, and G was the first AU, so I'd argue those are pretty excusable.... then there's X, which is clearly alt-UC, hence the need to maintain visual continuity with the main series. Turn A breaks the mold, but then we're back to Seed and Seed Destiny which are UC reboots.....

I feel like everyone's warmed up to Barbados Slim because it is different for a purpose. The series is pretty different in terms of who its main characters are. It's not just different for the sake of being different.

It's the iconic look. It's like asking why all the Enterprise's in Star Trek all have the same basic shape. That's what people recognize.

A better question is why the protagonist units always always have the same generic set up of shield rifle and sabers and maybe an extra cannon or two. If they have other option packs, like Impulse and Strike they'll still opt for the usual set up half the time. 00 changed it up a bit with sword guns, an other AU's occasionally poke around with this but it's usually the same.

Even Gundam X went from the usual shield/gun combo and single big saber, to machine gun and unique Divider shield, to the usual rifle shield and two sabers loadout.

The ZZ dumped the Zeta's mouthplate for a more traditional grill, and aside from all the gimmicks, is a lot like the FA Gundam with it's double beam rifle, heavy armor, and shoulder cannons. It gets a bit more noticable with the Enhanced and FA ZZ, since those dump the transformation and combination gimmicks for being useless for it.
