New Trek series coming, Kurtzman is producer. I'm still hype, what about you /m/?
>>
I'm hype and ready to watch it, unless they announce either of the following
>We're bringing on JJ Abrams to direct
>We're going in a new, less Trek-ey direction
>the phrase "darker and more mature" is used in a press release
>>
It's gonna launch CBS' new streaming service, at 10 dollars a month. So, it's fucking dead on arrival. Those CBS assfags had to kill this series on arrival to once again try and boost their dumb attempts at self importance instead of just making a deal with Netflix or Hulu.

It'll be Voyager and UPN all over again, except worse.

I'll wait and see where and when it's set to start getting excited.
>>
>>13446294
Pretty much this.

Also depends on if its in the Prime universe or the JJ verse.

If not prime I'm pretty much dropping it there. But I doubt they'd do a series outside the prime universe so I'm not to worried.
>>
Star Trek as a franchise is pretty much dead anyway. This will just be a desperate attempt to wrangle in the last few people who have any hopes at all for Trek after the disaster that was Into Darkness.
>>
>>13446310
I'll be surprised if it isn't reboot universe, but I hope it's not the original movie cast.

Won't be the JJverse since Paramount has exclusive rights to that. They wouldn't even let Star Trek Online use their Connie redesign for a cash shop ship, so I can't see them letting CBS use the entire setting.
>>
>>13446318
I'm 90% sure it's gonna be another round of Kirk and Spock, since it seems like the CBS/Paramount execs are afraid that people won't know if it's Star Trek if it's not the original characters.
>>
>>13446336
Ah I didn't know that so that's good.

>>13446294
This as well any of that and yeah not interested. I'm not really excited so much as curious at this point.

Sounds like we're safe-ish from that possibility at least.
>The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

I'm glad. It means people will stop saying that Enterprise is the worst series.
>>
>>13446336
So the shit between CBS and Paramount is still going on after 10 years? How funny.
>>
>>13446782
Definitely not pre-tos after the failure of Enterprise.

Bermanga and Enterprise killed Trek.

Abrams just raped the corpse.
>>
>>13446840
>Bermanga and Enterprise killed Trek.

Voyager killed trek. Enterprise just failed to perform adequate CPR.
>>
Enterprise isn't really that bad. It's just not particularly good, either. And it's kind of repetitive. Every episode is just Archer and a random other crew member going down to a planet and getting kidnapped and/or imprisoned.
>>
>>13446864
They could have revived it if they fired those two hacks. The last season of Ent was decent once Braga stopped being the main contributor for storylines. It's just by then people got tired of Ent by then.

I am dreading this new show. I am dreading it for one simple reason.
You can't make a continuation of a new series now a days without it just being nothing but "call backs and references". It's going to be a glorified clip show/homage hour of previous storylines and characters. That is my worst case scenario dooms day prediction.
>>
>>13446782
Post Nemesis. Probably either before or during STO so they can cross-promote the shit out of them.
Or maybe a little afterwards so the series can write the new plot and STO just rides along with easy updates from it.

I think it'd be cool if it followed Captain Shon.
Season 1 could take place aboard the USS Belfast, and the season could end with the Dominion attack on Facility 4028 and the destruction of the Belfast.
Season 2 begins with the crew's reassignment to the Enterprise-F and the battle to retake DS9 from the Jem'Hadar.
>>
>>13446782
Either they paid off Pramount with tons of money and got the alternate universe, or it's post-Nemesis.
>>
>>13447280
*Paramount
>>
>>13447249

That could work, ish, but it'd also force them into a canon player, ship class and ship name, which isn't gonna happen.

Oh fuck, this most of all. Having the old standard of Trek's social commentary on an optimistic and lighter platform is exactly what we need right now.

>inb4 Tumblr: The Show shitposting
I think CBS knows better, even with the platform experiment.

>>13447308
All in all, this is true. And no matter what my option I'm going to watch until second season, because Trek has this really bad habit of shitty first seasons.

I wouldn't mind it being post Romulous and the Romulan Star Empire getting BTFO by that super nova.

The Dominion really shook up the power balance in the Alpha quadrant, I'd like to see how one of the big players just vanishing in the course of a day does it.

Yeah, I know STO had some stuff dealing with that. Never got to play, never will get to play. So it might as well not exist for me. Plus games are always secondary canon anyway.

Plus I like the tech in that era the most for some reason. We could potentially see the beginning of a lot of stuff that leads to the time travel shit of the Enterprise-J and those time ships from VOY.

But most of all I just want to see a future in television I would actually want to live in again.

So, aside from the obvious (good writing, actually speculative sci-fi, action mixed in just the right amounts to be exciting without taking away from the show being primarily about the characters, and so on), what do you want? Little things that you won't miss if they aren't there, but that would make the show just that much better for you.

For me?

There's like only one server IIRC.

Also, you get 3 character slots, one for Fed, one Rom, one KDF. Build them wisely, there's a ton of online guides for this, and if you join a good fleet there'll usually be tons of high-level fleetmates giving you good advice.

Basically if you mix beam/cannon energy types on your ship, it drains enough weapon energy that your DPS (damage per second) will suck badly. It's called rainbows and skittles because of the multicolored beams/cannon bolts. Since high-level, team-based STF missions are all about DPS, your teammates will hate the shit out of you because you can't pull your own weight and the mission will usually fail badly, wasting everyone's time (about 15-30 minutes) for little or no reward. And probably ship damage which will have to be repaired later.

When you can't kill a low-level STF mob in your high-level ship because your DPS is all rainbowed or skittled to nothing, it's everyone's problem.
>>

>>
>>13448571
your ship has 6-8 weapon slots on it, so you can equip various weapons and a ton of energy weapon types, skittleboats generally mix all sorts of energy types, which usually leaves the ship with less damage, but a multitude of different effects, shooting out various different coloured beams in a 'taste the rainbow!' manner. DPS purists usually ragequit at the sight of them because muh optimisation. skittleboats are usually just a symptom of a shitty player, not the cause, as you can do a lot of damage in a skittleboat still if you know what you're doing.

Dorkly I have posted in these in threads with you for several years now and I may not be glorious leader but please heed my advice. STO is terrible. Since an expansion called Delta Rising was released the game became a never ending grind where the build you would like to use will never be within your grasp. Do not let the games early quick level ups deceive you.

The vitriol was so bad on the forums that the majority of people with more than a thousand posts either got banned or just gave up on the game.

In the time leading up to the expansions release and its settlement period the developers got caught lying multiple times about policy, bug fixes, and responses to the players.

The game is so filled with bugs that one thing or another will stop you from playing several times per week. The game currently has a bug where it freezes on a loading screen, which necessitates a restart. The Mac version is 100% broken right now and when you could play it that analysis would probably not change much. A memory leak went years without being fixed and did not get patched until reddit very specifically complained about it and some other bugs. /STOG/ universally called the games code Vulcan Jenga because when one thing got fixed another broke. Cryptic servers are shit and get DDOSED almost monthly.

You are probably already in the game and feeling that first thrill of using your favorite ships in combat but please at least trust me on this, the game is not worth any money and it is not worth more than a casual play through of each faction.
>>
>>13448755

I'm just saying I've never, EVER seen a skittleboat that could even do like 1k DPS. Maybe I just play at the wrong times, but I've never seen ONE skittleboat player that could do enough DPS to be worthwhile.

I think the ones I've seen must reduce their weapon power because MUH SHIELDS or MUH ENGINES. Only way to explain their insanely low DPS.
>>
Since we're on the topic of STO; when Cryptic bugged out a few weeks ago and sent out a bunch of promo codes to the wrong people, I got a free T6 Exploration Cruiser.
Now, I've mostly played Escorts aside from a short stint with the Connie at the beginning, so how do I make the most out of this happy little accident? What sort of gear should I be kitting it out with?

>>
>>13448767

>>where the build you would like to use will never be within your grasp.

That part I actually have to disagree with. Given that no significant gear is hidden behind random drops(unlike most other MMOs) the only thing standing between you and your build is how much time you want to spend getting it. I've gotten 8 toons so far over the past year to 60, all with different builds and focuses. Not all of them may be good enough to run Elites, but meh, those're no different from Normals other than bigger numbers and optionals that no longer are.

As for the rest, the grind is still there, but it's not any worse than grinding out Valor points or daily quests etc on WoW in my experience, unless you try and hardcore rush-grind XP for spec points. The only major bug I've run into is a memory leak and crash that's been there for me since Season 10 dropped(but fair point on Mac players getting screwed).

Maybe they just got their act together better, since you obviously quit back before I started? Either way, give it a try, see for yourself, and then decide is all I have to say.
>>
>>13448860

I still don't know what anyone was thinking when they did SGU. None of the charm or fun that SG-1 or Atlantis had was there.
>>
>>13448965

I think they were trying to make another Battlestar Gallactica.

The reboot did well, and they kept trying to revive it with Caprica and stuff, but it never caught.

"Stargate: Atlanits - The Adventures of Rodmey McKay" is still by far my favorite SF show though.
>>
>>13447796
STO is actually supposed to be primary canon in the main universe -- that's what they've claimed anyway. They've had some good storylines.
>>
>>13449113
Not quite that, but best I recall it's worked itself together to fit into canon as best it can.

I would be interested in if a new show tries to run a few storylines based on the Romulan split, would be neat to see them tackle a thing like the new Romulan Republic's founding. Though I'm 90% sure they'd try to make some kind of current events commentary using it. Ooh, and then there was that Devidians subplot, that was neat. That's probably prime adaptation material.
>>
>>13448944
>no significant gear is hidden behind random drops
Crafting is making your own random drops and that's how you get most of the games weapons (and the best weapons). Upgrading is the only alternative to crafting and the mod awards on your items are random.
>maybe they just got their act together
I'm still playing and they haven't. I don't care about how shit WOWs grind is. I'm talking about how this used to be a nice game with huge potential.

Why not an alien for a captain? Part of the series then would be about an alien dealing with the human condition, finding himself both very different and not-so-different along the way. The only problem is contriving a scenario where an alien that has not spent a lot of time at a Starfleet academy would be in charge of a starship. Alternatively it could be set on an entirely alien vessel rather than another saucerboat with human crew tagging along for the ride.

That's because he got shit done and had no problem betraying the principles he claimed to uphold if the ends justified the means displaying blatant hypocrisy on a staggering level.

Sisko was never defined by his blackness. It was still an important part of his character when it was relevant like in Far Beyond the Stars, but it hardly ever defined who he was. Sisko was more of a Greek tragic hero compared to gentlemanly Picard or cowboy Kirk. (Even then, he was pretty far in the good camp, even when he did questionable shit he was always struggling over it.) Contrast to Janeway or Archer, who never really had consistently written characters and just felt all over the place in their command decisions.

If his father was any indication, he was taught where he "came from". Even the setting from the episode you named reflects that. And with the whole prophet thing, it literally picked one of the few people who'd be super-empathetic in the far far future with their worshippers and the whole inherent civil rights issues.
I agree fully, being black doesn't define him, and you can have everything still apply with any other race.

I'd be ok if we get something more like DS9's under a pale moonlight. not for the whole show but a bit more of that
>>
>>13449674
Very unlikely, mostly due to the captain generally being viewed as the main character and writers/execs worrying about audience engagement if you stray too far from something readily relatable. Closest we'd probably get to that is an alien XO a bit more exotic than usual.
>>

I hate to beat a dead horse, but I have a lot of misgivings about this. Not just about the kind of social commentary a modern Star Trek series would try to handle, but about how a Star Trek series could function in today's television climate.

These days when everyone wants to play it safe, where every show has to include some sort of overblown mystery or who's screwing who largely drives the plot, I'm not sure a new series could survive for very long. I also doubt being relegated to a subscription service is going to do much for the quality, especially one attached to a network that helped contribute to the decay of primetime television.

>>
>>13449113
Listen, Star Trek in one way is like Gundam. Unless it's a TV show, movie, or OVA(Or whatever the western equivalent of this is) then it's not primary canon. Games, books, comics, etc are secondary canon and while a lot of that stuff is cool it can be easily over written by some who ever's making this new show because they had no idea that secondary material existed. At best STO is just some alt universe that split from the main universe the moment the thing started. If this new show has something that conflicts with information shown in STO guess which they're going to go with and say is canon?
>>
>>13450100
What you describe is basically what the Abrams movies did to the "primary canon" including the original source material too. In many ways the Abrams movies establishes a precedent there is nothing that can't be written off at a latter date for some other director or writer's convenience.

Strongly doubt it, there's to much of a divide in philosophy of what should be mocked between the Joel and Mike camp. With the former wanting to stick strictly with old films while the latter having no problem moving onto more modern movies if you look at what RiffTrax and Cinematic Titanic do.

Problem is JJverse didn't have a series. I always thought that was a stupid idea too; the original universe was spread across all kinds of media and made things more fun to watch because of it.

Even Into Shityness would've been better if it had some TV weight behind it, it was certainly a factor with WoK.

Really, reason Wrath of Khan was so good was they brought in an outsider to handle the entire thing. >>
>>13450782
climbing rocks and kicking gods in the dick are two very important parts of TOS that had gone unrepresented in the movies until then
>>
>>13450609
The bigger problem is getting the crew back together since it's pretty much split between the old and new guard of MST3K. All the old guys like

Joel had Trace Beaulieu, Elvis Weinstein, Frank Conniff and Mary Jo Pehl. Meanwhile you got Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett. Also we have no idea what will happen with Jim Mallon or if he buried the hatchet with Joel since their fighting was what caused Joel to leave in the first place. Granted Cinematic Titanic has gone under so Joel might be going to Mike and his group to get something working and then get as many of the old crew back for the project.

All hypothetical.

>>13450787
Nicholas Meyer, the big thing that made him successful was he watched the entire original series to get a feel for it, and that's where he picked up on Khan after seeing Space Seed. The writers also came up with a fucked up script, with Meyers basically rewrote from scratch in 12 or 13 days. When he wanted to kill Spock, everyone else just went 'You can't do that!', but it ended up being the only way to get Nimoy on board after the first movie bombed.

He's also the reason we have the stronger military/naval themes in II and IV.

Although him doing his homework was the ultimate reason why the movie was successful, as opposed to Nemesis where they brought on Stuart Baird, a director who had nothing to do with the series and he just winged it. And it showed.

>>13450934
It's more of a matter of re-consolidating the old fanbase by having as many of the old cast return which would increase the odds of getting more people to watch the early episodes and create something to build off of as opposed to only getting the Joel faction to watch it while the people who followed Mike's group continue to just watch Rifftrax.

I'm betting post nemesis. I see them totally throwing everything STO out of the window and starting a new sequence of events. Likely with a future Enterprise. (think 1701-G)

However, I wouldn't mind if they decided to go back to the decades between the end of The Undiscovered Country and the start of TNG. It was supposedly a huge time of exploration and tech advancement. Plus the Excelsior class came into its own and supplanted the old Constitution class.

I would even be ok if the reboot universe was used, but supposedly JJ and bad robot have a death grip on everything nutrek.

Well, there's also the variable of the other actors shitting on the show depending on their current relationship. So Joel could at least make sure that while Mike and company aren't involved, they won't do anything either positive, or negative to affect it.

>>13451127
>the Excelsior class came into its own and supplanted the old Constitution class
Shame it got completely shit on by the time DS9 came out. Yes, it was technologically obsolete, but considering it was such a work horse, they'd be able to upgrade it enough to hold its own in the dominion war instead of always seeing it get one shot and the saucer section denigrating.

Given that they apparently just worked out a deal where they're getting residuals of some sort after all these years I don't think there's any real ill will between the two camps.

Honestly, it seems so.

In inner fan-fiction says that it's probably something like the newer ships nacelles being more fragile because of desires to reach higher warp speeds. Also greatly improved shield systems. I play a skittleboat - and not just a skittle boat, a rainbow, turret only skittleboat and I can do a decent 15k on the typical parsing mission, ISA (boy is it funny when someone tries to parse shame the skittleboat and it turns out they did better than 'purist' builds)

The skittle scene is a lot better now due to the spire tactical consoles that lessen the damage difference between running a 'one flavor' ship and a rainbow type

Plus if you really need to, thanks to lockboxes and the gamblers trying to recoup losses; you can pick up turrets of the same flavour but with different beam colours - its an expensive, albeit effective workaround and can still cause as much rage

I won't care if a member of the crew is gay or not. What I will be upset by though is if they take every opportunity to make sure you know they're gay and make a big deal out of it. Don't even mention it or anything, if there's ever a formal function show them dancing with a member of the same sex in the background, show them doing date shit in the background with a member of the same sex, but don't draw attention to it, don't make it the focus. I've heard as much. By filmed history alone she was the chief communications office aboard one of the most storied ships in Federation history. She'd know the language of one of their biggest enemies of the time. If you go by all the additional shit, she ended up deep in Starfleet Intel doing spy shit and knowing everyone's dirty secrets. Not knowing Klingon is a cruel joke for her character, but it was still a funny scene, yeah.

There was that ep where it bonded Tuvok and Neelix into a perfect hybrid because pollen.

I don't remember if it was TNG or DS9, but on one of those they'd wanted to do something just like that. I want to say it was just an offhand mention of "his husband, but I'm not at all sure of that.

Studio canned it, of course.

I know Garak's actor in DS9 wanted him to be gay and the studio wouldn't allow it.

Dude. They already brushed against same-sex and trans shit with Dax. Just get another Trill who was a different sex in a past life.

Two girls kissing, that'll really freak out the squares, oh yeah.
Revolutionary stuff.
Fight the power.
>>
>>13458644
Not sure what you're butt-blasted about. It's a perfect vehicle for identity issues of all sorts, that's all. And they've even used it for that in the past.

And it's a little more emotional than just a random kiss.

And we got mother fucking modern family preaching homosexual marriage. It's a battle that's already been won, and even if it's two dudes kissing, it's common place now.

I agree with the anon who says keep is a background element.

That fight was won in the decades Trek was canned.

>fat acceptance
I hope not. It's fucking canon that humanity have advanced beyond being fat fucks. They'd... have to do it with pot bellied aliens, I guess.

Can't possibly be worse than Enterprise.
But if it does I really really want to see the trainwreck.
>>
>>13458919
Yeah, most franchises only have one low bar to beat. Trek has at least two, if not three.

Please, the Excelsior and Miranda class were made to be shit on in DS9. Also the Defiant was pulling it's punches against the Lakota since they didn't want to fight and didn't use their Pulse Phaser Cannons. Also it took 2 phaser hits to take down a hapless Cardassina platform. It would be nice to see them do more damage, but they always had the most high profile destruction.

>>13458714
IIRC correctly, some soap operas have guy dudes in it now, so it is more main stream.

>>13458886
Basically this, Obesity is an alliment, and it would be pretty screwed up if they haven't created away to just dissolve fat cells in the future.

>>13454581
Nice

>>13454779
Or she just got lazy and let the universal translator do all the work.

>>13458546
They tried to make the helmsmen from First Contact gay IIRC although the actor hated the idea. Also they went and killed him so it was a moot point.

The helm was a death trap for Enterprises run by Picard, didn't at least 5 people get killed who were helmsmen?
>>
>>13458997
Both the Lakota and Defiant were pulling their punches. Also the defiant did use its pulse phasers.

I'm watching for the first time, in order of release. Just watched The Naked Time.

I had to pause it because I started crying when Spock started crying about his mother and saying he was ashamed whenever he felt friendship for Kirk.

A symbiote who is in a (fe)male host for the first time and is still adjusting would be good.

>>13458644
It was the first same sex kiss on TV or something like that.

>>13458886
Well star fleet is a paramilitary organization it would be expected for them to maintain a certain physical fitness standard.
>>
Trek already did fat acceptance
it was the tos movies
>>
>>13462873
I think the TNG movies did it too

and the Enterprise finale

so I'm watching Datalore and Lore's all BRRRRRRRRRROTHERing all over the place

has anybody checked the moondub's dialog of that stuff compared to the Japanese dialog of Metal Gear Solid?
That time I wondered about Descent and Ayanami didn't pan out, but I still wonder about possible Trek dialog references out there.
