THe only reason why the Kampfer even won against the GMs in 0080 was because somebody was a moron who deployed them facing towards the ground, meaning they couldn't actually shoot the Kampfer because they actually cared about the people living in the colony.

Besides, 0080 has already shown that zeeks can't win without literal magic. Behold, the magical teleporting GM, which teleports behind cover so that it doesn't just shoot the Hygogg, and then has the GM pilots have the reaction times of a dying snail.

By "worse weapons" I meant they don't get ranged beam weapons. They get a machine gun as standard loadout (Even the commander versions). And instead of a bazooka, they just glue a cannon to the existing backpack.

Also on a side note, from what I've heard and seen that model in the pic is one of the worst gundam kits bandai has ever made. Mine is arriving in 3 weeks. Should be fun.

You mean literal armor armor. The Alex was more armored in every way than the original 78, and FA easily tanked the mines. After the smoke cleared, all that was left was target practice. Remember that the GM's 100mm gun can rip into its own armor (at close range, but still). Also the joints and head were exposed to the full blunt of the blast since they were unprotected, yet when the dust settled only the Chobham armor was damaged and conveniently cast off to show a scratch free Alex. If there wasn't plot armor, at best the head and main camera would be damaged, at worst, the joints would be rendered inoperable and it would be a sitting duck for the Kampher.

These mines aren't built to completely obliterate a mobile suit, just render a titanium/ceramic alloy leg inoperable or unrepairable. Even a line of them will only blast what's under them, not what's around them. And I don't recall a single mine landing and detonating on a joint or the head.

The problem is more related to the fact that the Chobham armor didn't cover 100% of the Alex. In fact, it didn't cover a whole hell of a lot of important things.

The problem is that the mines wrapped around the Alex and temporarily held it before they exploded. They hit the left arm and wrap around the torso to the left leg. Although the animation would seem to imply that the chain mine somehow only hit locations with chobham armor on them, it's neither possible nor wholly relevant.

My favorite part of looking at that scene, is seeing how the chain mine wraps around the skirt armor and then onto the left thigh (which is completely uncovered by the Chobham armor for some reason), and then back on to the skirt armor. The chain mines then wrap around AGAIN (despite not having enough length) and ends on the armor just above the left foot.

Again, the Alex took zero damage to the main body despite being wrapped nearly three times from arms/upper torso to legs. Somehow not a single mine covered a surface that wasn't covered by Chobham armor (which is simply not possible, given the shitty coverage it has), and somehow none of the explosive damaged the armor through at least the seams of the armor. Nevermind the fact that the explosive mines would damage the body with pressure alone, nevermind the explosively-formed penetrators that would at least do surface damage to the Alex.

Chobham armor is good and all, but it's just an extra layer of the armor that is already on the Alex. What was shown just cannot be.

What I'm saying is, explosives of that caliber directly latched onto a mobile suit can't only damage the Chobham armor. That's not really how explosives work and the armor itself doesn't even cover some of the most vital parts of the Alex outside of the torso. It's like putting extra plates of armor on the whole body of a Humvee, and then putting regular automotive glass in for the windows.

Ramba Ral once pushed aside molten metal, nukes cause shockwaves in space and beams can blast away half a cockpit but leave the pilot unscathed. Even in UC, some physics are not spectacular. That doesn't mean that the director/s are purposely ignoring them just so that muh gendum can win. If you think about it and remove a little artistic liberty in the action sequence, that one chain mine could very well have hit only Chobham-covered parts. Because of the sheer amount of stress the joints put up with and the fact that engineers don't mind exposing them, it's fair to say those are incredibly strong even without Chobam. I'll give you the visor and some scratches on the armor but it's fair to assume there are backup cameras that would have withstood the pressure of the blast (remember that mobile suits can do Earth and space pressure changes with few problems, cameras are probably impervious to pressure/blast). So in the end, the result doesn't change. The Kampfer was always outmatched. The Alex would have taken minor damage but still had advantages in everything except speed (at their range this was negligible). Kampfer always loses to Alex.

They could've covered the Alex and diamonds and it wouldn't make a damn difference. Just the pressure of the explosions alone would dent the armor, bust hydraulic tubes, and so on. It's not an issue of artistic liberty or little physics errors; it's just blatantly wrong. That's an issue that 0080 has throughout, despite its fantastic quality. The people that animated the action scenes didn't do a spectacular job with making it believable, even by Gundam standards.

As far as armor distribution, the knees the bottom half of the upper thighs aren't covered, and the upper thighs are also uncovered on the sides of the suit. The knee joint is an extremely vital part of the mobile suit and was pretty much ignored by the Chobham armor's designers. It's not even an issue of stress or weight, they just wasted their time armoring parts of the legs that weren't even important, AND covering up the leg thrusters in the process.

The Alex should be about as serviceable as that M1A1 is.

The "physics errors" still stand. These people aren't experts. If something explodes, it causes damage. If it doesn't, it didn't. What matters is that this is consistent in the universe (all of UC is kind of on par with this but Origin showed a battleship crumpling under pressure due to hull damage, which was a good step.) because it gives neither an unfair advantage. Nitpicking little errors in that are consistent throughout Gundam doesn't change the fact that the Alex is a walking powerhouse made to cut down Zeek MS like butter while taking a few to the chin, and so it does.
