Well, I just watched it on Daisuki.
It's a mixed bag. After having really enjoyed Unicorn, it was hard not to compare the two. But there were several nagging things that stopped me from really being stoked about this.
Several of the characters are just too over the top, and pull you out of the story. There are some pretty heavy things going on, and the actions of Jimba and Dozel threw me out of the story.
I tried to give the CGI a chance, but after Unicorn, it's hard not to wish they had stuck with traditional animation.
All that being said, I really enjoyed the episode. I'm still confused on if this will just stick with Char's backstory, or if we'll go into 0079, but I get the idea that this will end with the start of 0079. I wish they had gone into Deikun's backstory more; his descent into madness had absolutely no extrapolation and I always thought of him as a bit of a messiah. His portrayal in this betrayed that.
That being said, I had fun watching it, but there were several directorial problems that stopped it from being something truly fantastic.

kind of the point of his character in the origin, I think Yas wanted to put both version of zeon (the principality and the republic) as crazy earth hating warmongers so people would sympathise with them less and Deikun's murder was nothing more but a power grab by one madman from another.

I finished the first episode. Not sure quite how I feel watching it. It was almost boring after a while watching a straight rehash of the manga. All in all the animation wasn't bad, but there were a bunch of weird faces made by the characters and some strange animation errors here and there. You can see MS IGLOO nods all over the episode when it comes to stylistic carryovers and what not. Kinda bothersome if you ask me, but it is what it is. Also, for Munzo being a closed-type colony, it was odd seeing stars at night considering you should see the other side when looking up.

Just watched it (in Japanese):

- I don't know who comes off more crazy, Zeon Deikun or Jimba Ral. Those two were extremely overwrought and paranoid. But to be fair to Jimba Ral, people actually WERE out to get him, and he WAS right about the Zabis. But you can tell Ramba was getting irritated by his father.

- Two very strong women characters in a kickass sense, Kycilia Zabi and Crowley Hamon. The lesson of this first chapter is do NOT mess with either of them. Also, we see Kcyclia's... uh... her Bunch Colonies, if you know what I mean. Then there's Casval and Artesia's mother, who's gone through a lot and has to make a sacrifice for her children's sake, and there's an immense strength in that, too.

- Little Casval is so young and yet so unbelievably badass, standing up to Kycilia, taking the controls of the Guntank. And Mayumi Tanaka (Kuririn in DB/Z, Luffy in One Piece) does a fantastic job and gives him this really tough, but sensitive sensibility.

- Little Artesia is the cutest thing imaginable. I love seeing her interact with Ramba Ral and her cat, Lucifer.

- I'm not sure how I feel about some of the more comedic bits of the feature, especially when some of them feel a little out of place during dramatic moments. I do kind of like Dozle's stitches popping and blood flying all over the people he's yelling at.

- Giren Zabi seems so BORED with everything. I guess he's waiting for that war to break out to have his fun.

- Deikun's real wife is one ugly, bitter old hag, and she sounds like a spurned Randian

- Seeing Ramba Ral, Crowley Hamon, Tachi, and Clamp at that bar was really neat. I want a spinoff of that set up!

- Damn it, Sunrise/Bandai ended up with my money, anyway. But just for a rental... and probably a rental for the English dub, too.

My thoughts on Origin:

First 7 minutes isn't bad, but I can't say I'm fine with the portrayal of mobile suits. A zaku should not move like the god damn Unicorn lol. But that said, once the story shifts to 0068, things get quite good. For those that read the manga, it pretty much follows the first half of Volume 1. The episode ends with Casval and Artesia leaving Munzo. It follows the manga mostly the same from that point on. Minor stuff here and there, like Gihren playing Go when he speaks with Kycelia rather than gardening. The ova does seem to spell out more heavy handedly that Kycelia killed Sasro. But again, if you read the manga you know what to expect.

Production values-wise....well, it's definitely a step down from Unicorn. It mostly looks nice, but when there is CGI, it is kind of distracting. Especially for scenes like Ramba driving. But the CGI isn't terrible, just unfortunate. Definitely looks cheaper than Unicorn for sure.

Musically, it's not bad. Definitely not as memorable as Unicorn, but still effective at building an atmosphere. I hate to keep comparing it to Unicorn, but seeing as how it is the most recent OVA those comparisons are inevitable. One the plus side, the ending theme was pretty nice.

I had all of the same points as you. Some of the comedy just pulls you right out of the episode. But Kycillia and Hamon really stole the show.

I disagree about how much they showed of Deikun. Tomino never intended to flesh him out, he's just a martyr for the Zabis (The actual interesting ones), and his Spacenoid theory is inconsistent and poorly understood so it doesn't matter that we never hear from the horse's ass. I'm really glad they added in the new Zabi sibling. That the Zabi family managed to take over with no suspicion always irked me.

The Federation ships do, with the exception of the Salamis which is completely blank on the bottom. It's actually Zeon that is the worst about this. Zeon designs always have their firepower located on one side. That's not inherently a bad thing though.

While it would seem advantageous to have a large quantity of cannons to fire in various locations, that also means that you have less cannons to fire at any one particular target. So if you're a Magellan and you have cannons on all four sides, you're weakened if the target isn't directly in front of your ship and therefore within the firing arc of all your weapons.

That also makes the Magellan a lot more expensive to produce, because you're basically making four ship decks with cannons and placing them on a single ship.

So is it better to have a ship with cannons on all sides, or a ship with a lot of cannons on one side?

Also it's worth noting that cannons generally are limited vertically, so if you put cannons on the bottom of a ship that doesn't help it very much in fighting against mobile suits or fighters. The Salamis is the odd man out for the Federation in not having any weapons on the underside, so it has to rely on weapon mounts on the side to hit targets below (which isn't a huge deal, really. They just have to rotate slightly).

Probably the compression/downsampling. There was a hell of a lot of talking in that game and they kept the entire thing to one dual-layer DVD. But the quality of the voice acting was so good that I barely noticed.

It makes me sad because even though XIII's actors were more naturalistic and did a fairly good job, they were given a shit script and obviously weren't able to do much with it.
