Although, in respect to OP's original question, I've been dwelling on the topic, and believe I've found an answer: livestreaming oneself reading. Not as in reading the book aloud to an audience, but rather pointing a webcam at yourself and reading in total silence. The total amount of exposure may be lessened, but the act alone compensates for that more than enough methinks.

I wish I could read on the train, I find the noise distracting.

It has nothing to do with pretentiousness. When I'm on a train I get bored. I could get out my chink phone and play some shitty f2p game, but that's wasted time. I don't like to waste time. Therefore I read or study. And I don't do because I want people to think I'm an intellectual or some other bullshit, I just want to be left in peace.
