Is it possible for someone who doesn't know Russian to take from Russian literature what a native speaker would?
>>
I've always wanted to know this too. Perhaps it's less a matter of being fluent in the language than understanding Russian culture and society , which is extremely weird from a western point of view. Whenever I read Russian novels I feel I'm not quite catching something and I have no idea what it is. Russian bros pls enlighten us

It's not about speaking the language as much as it is about having an understanding of their culture their take on Russia's history their values and so on.

I hope this helps to explain, Russian is the modern language that in construction and complexity is very much like Latin and because of this the language has a lot of linguistic subtlety and depending on proficiency of the user can wildly change itself. A lot of this subtle subtext is lost in especially older English translations.

The funny thing is that every Russian I have met in real life really fucking hate those jokes almost as much as they hate foreigners saying Cyкa Блядь.

Russian is here, cyкa, блядь. Our novels are shit, I guarantee it. Tolstoy was a shit-writer who didn't even see a war in person, Dostoyevsky was a drunkard in internal exile, Nabokov was a fuckin immigrant without any knowledge of Russian culture. Modern Russian literature sunk into decay even more deeper when compared with old shit though. That's it. So, you're catching everything and even more that you need to whenever you read those novels.

All of your criticisms were ad hominems and did not address any of your perceived issues with the works. Would you care to actually elaborate on the differences between Russian and English translations of the aforementioned works (ex. Crime and Punishment)?

Also, $1.09 for a pack of cigarettes is a great deal.

Pyotr I is like shit-straw, Bond (better but it is also like shit.. whatever) is selling for 90R ~ 1,5$ but considering that Russia is a poor country (average wages in remote places (practically all places that not Moskow and Saint-Petersburg) like that one I live in are 430$ per month or smth) that is quite expensive.

I haven't read English translation of Crime and Punishment bc I don't like Dostoevsky in general. I've seen movie-adaptation and read it in original - it was very boring and gloomy. Same hopelessness and filth I can see in my window after 1,5 century.

One Russian writer (it was Saltykov-Shchedrin) once said: "If you wake me up in a hundred years and ask me what is happening in Russia, I'll answer – they drink and steal". And he was absolutely right - such is a gist of our culture.

If all of your domestic cigarettes are shit why not just buy camels? Camels are only 65 Rubles in the image. How old is the image?

~1,5$ but I sure it is selling at a practically max (Maкc цeнa) price. In addition I think (But I may be wrong though) that their quality is essencially different from cigarettes that made in USA and Europe.

Russian soul is a totally Western invention.

It comes mainly from authors inspired by German Idealism and French literature (+ French masonic lodges and their philosophy).

Pushkin is nothing but an occidentalist, yet he is praised as the founder of the Russian literary language.

Dostoyevsky is nothing but an occidentalist (don't forget that he was par of a revolutionary group in his youth and that his "orthodoxy" was far from what it was, and that the only reason he wasn't condemned was because he was friends with Pobedonotsev) that mixed his socialism with the New Testament. His "theology" can even be close to a sort of chtonean gnosticism (= paganism). Turgenyev called him "the Russian marquis de Sade" after he saw his utterly religious funeral.

Tolstoï is nothing but an occidentalist, even though he made his way through oriental pantheism (that can be put next to gnosticism).

And let's not talk about the so called "orthodox theology" that is commonly spread in the West, i.e. the fantasies that emanated from St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute (that was called "evilish" by monks from the Mount Athos).

Read letters from Ivan the Terrible, read Avvakum (even if he's a heretic), read Tchaadaev, read Tyuttchev, read Leontiev.

Even if you don't know Russian you can take a peek at what it is. If you want to deepen your understanding, I think it can be good to learn at least some etymologies and some grammatical points.
