What's a good read about North Korea? First hand accounts of life there would be good, but I want something that has a bit more to it than just horror stories. Stories of life in the Soviet Union would be great too.

In Asia by Tiziano Terzani, I wouldn't know if it was translated into English.
It's a work of fiction but the first part of "The Orphan Master's Son" is brilliant at depicting the mundane lives people live there, in small towns outside the capital.

The point of view of a canadian animator who worked there for a time. The book mostly stays in the realm of anecdote, but still shows a lot about life in NK.
