Why is reading such a chore? Is it me or it's the writers that are being irritating? Why can't they be straight-forward for once? I read a lot when I was kid but it's was mainly to kill time. Pic related is the only western book I truly enjoyed. How do I learn not to get bored while reading?

Try your brain to enjoy the process, slowly digest the narrative and appreciate the craft in general
You are too used to quick, fast and cheap methods of entertainment, there is no easy way around breaking this habit

The problem is that you're too used to consuming things for the plot. Plot has been and always should be a thread to hang much more interesting things on: prose, observations about the world, world-building, funny/intriguing/sad/etc. moments, and all sorts of little things.
The reason why it's difficult to appreciate those things is because you're not used to it.

Read some fantasy. Will get you started.
Then you can read Children of Hurin, if you dare.
Both are pretty short too.
