What do you guys think about pic related? I found it to be much more interesting and nuanced than his more famous books, though lacking in "lyricism" for the most part. I think it makes for a great bildungsroman of political disillusionment, especially in the Looking Back on the Spanish War segment - I know it was written later than the rest of the book, but I think it should be considered an afterthought or appendix to the main text.

Well, it seems you can't distinguish between fiction and non-fiction.

What a pointless comment - as if fiction couldn't offer an in-depth treatment of a subject and non-fiction couldn't be written beautifully.

Love it. One of the alltime best military memoirs - his feeling of love and camaraderie for his unit comes through strongly in the prose, just as he resents the larger Communist structures for letting them down. Possibly a better indictment of Stalin than even The Revolution Betrayed - Trotsky had a deep analysis, but Orwell brings the human weight and consequences.

This.

I'm kind of butthurt more people haven't read Homage To Catalonia.

It was a good thing the Republicans lost the war, despite the atrocities the Nationalists committed.

This book is basically the ultimate redpill on why communism can never work. You should absolutely read it for that reason and for the story and interesting history.

This. I took a course last semester of Civil War literature and we did Homage to Catalonia and contrasted it to For Whom the Bell Tolls (which I had previously read and loved). I ended up adoring Homage to Catalonia! The scene with the rooftops ceasefire is probably one of the most humanizing but absurd passages I have ever read in a war memoir.

It's one of the easiest recommendations at the bookstore I work at and I've gotten great response about it from people who came back in again after reading it. Funny because I respect but am not a big fan of Orwell's fiction. I wonder how much of HtC is embellished?

You are spot on about that. It really showed the behind the scenes scheming and manipulation of the Communists during the Spanish Civil War. Orwell offers great anecdotal evidence from a totally western point of view that paints a pretty fucking clear picture of the actual puppeteer that is Communism, as opposed to a romanticized bluepilled ideal form of Communism that doesn't work off of paper.

I knew a guy whose favourite book was this.

He even got 1984 in Roman numerals tattooed on his arm.

I later saw photographs if him fucking his girlfriend someone had found on that disgusting BDSM dating site. He had warts all over his penis.

I've never read it.

My favourite of Orwell, it's a great account of the spanish war. Skip the chapter extensively discussing the different chapters though.

>that part where the communists start to take over
Really made me feel the fear of and hate for Stalinism
>>
>>9940012
That's specifically the Stalinist national bureaucracy at work, though, you can't derive a wider condemnation of all communist ideas from it. Apart from anything else, Orwell himself remained a fiercely commited Socialist after the war; he's just unusual in that he was willing to turn his rhetorical guns on people within the Left who he thought had lost sight of their proper goals.
