How do you write compelling dialogue?

You can't imitate inventiveness. The way you write it, sure, but not the charisma in the phrases.
William Gaddis is the master in chief I shit you not. 10/10 dialogue. He makes nearly everything else read like bearotica self-published fan fiction.

I've always loved writers who can make dialogue actually sound like humans talking. Huck Finn is a great example of this. When characters are conversing it reads like actual southerners talking to each other.
