I want to pick up a copy of the Iliad. I have read parts of Fagles' translation of The Odyssey and didn't care for it. I've decided to start with The Iliad instead, and I'm torn between Lattimore and Pope's translations.
So, Lattimore or Pope?

Lattimore.

Pope
Fagles
Fagles.
POPE
If those were the only option then pope. Chapman is best though

Fitzgerald
Depends on what you want out of the experience.
If you can get used to Pope's word choice and sentence structure, his is extremely musical to the ear and would easily be the "populist" choice, while still retaining a fair bit of the faithfulness to the text. If you want high fidelity to the original text (which, IMHO, is beside the point for an originally orally transmitted story that was always intended to entertain those hearing it), then get Lattimore.

Someone tell me more about Rees vs Fagles? I have them both.
Can I just watch a video summary of the book, I don't want to fall for the Greek meme

If you want to read pope, get pope. If you want to read homer, get chapman.
Lombardo, any day.
