Hp Lovecraft wrote some amazing short stories
I've been reading The Schoolmistress and other storis by Chekhov. Having never read him before I wonder why he isn't talked about here more often. He is sublime.

If you liked Carver, read Chekhov and Tolstoy. If you liked O'Henry, read Saki and Twain. Dubliners is probably the best single short story collection by one author (some say it's a novel and the stories are chapters--I think that's dumb). I remember fondly this anthology that I would read over and over, that pretty much got me into reading: it's called 50 Great Short Stories, edited by one Milton Crane. It's mostly centered on American authors and they're not all that great but, as a whole, it's a great intro to short stories and to literature in general.
