>book is shit
>"it's for children bro"
Why do people keep justifying shitty young adult literature as being for children? When books like alice in wonderland exist? Besides do you really want to be feeding children trash?

dude if any of us owned a bookstore do you think we'd allow children?

True
Children's lit has inherent limitations to what can be done, and even to the degree that a children's book can sometimes deal with deep subjects, it almost always has to balance that with genuine
lightheartedness here and there.
So, the weaknesses of a YA book are venial at the end of the day. It's not "real" lit in the first place.

Till quite recently (around the beginning of the 20 century) kids were seen as "little adults". That's why till then there were no "childrens cloths" just smaller editions of the same things adults wore. The same goes to literature. Children were expected to understand the same concepts in an adequat to their age language, which meant that instead of YA they read classical lit like Verne, Melville or Caroll. Even Austin was considered to be only something young naive women read, the Twilight of their time. The fact that it is todays accepted as high literature says much about our development. People try to prolong their childhood (through video games and behaving in childish ways as well as sticking to softer education) which results in more demand for borderline retarded books.
If people would accept that they have to grow up and that children aren't retards but sponges which will suck up the knowledge you present, there would be no such think as current YA.

>it's not "real" lit unless it's dark and serious

>>book is shit
>>"it's for children bro"
People have been using this shit argument forever and for everything. I watch a lot of movie reviews and they complain about the same shit.
It's not justification, they're telling you to stop reading children's books you manchild

It is a justification, and if a book can only appeal to children than it's garbage period. A book that preys on the ignorance of children but doesn't stand up to scrutiny when you get older is pure shit. Children's literature is actually arguably harder to write, a good one anyway.
