I haven't read any fantasy books in years but recently i've been thinking about getting into the game of thrones books.

I really like the show but i feel like its being pushed to a path with too much mindless action. I like exploring the characters and having more build up before the climax takes place

Will the books satisfy my needs or will i be bored to death?

Don't bother, as he probably won't finish them leaving you with thousands of pages to read with no ending.

If he does finish in the next few years then by all means pick it up then, but there's better genre stuff about. Head to the SFFG and ask them.
