Looking for nonfiction books about understanding addiction and drug addicts or even gambling addicts. I'm a nurse and this area interests me when dealing with patients. NOT looking for self-help books.

Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas by Natasha Dow Schull. The writing is academic and dry, but the research is fascinating.
Requiem for a Dream was better than expected.

I highly recommend Righteous Dopefiend by Bourgois and Schoenberg. It's an ethnographical study of a homeless population of drug addicts in San Fransico. The two authors (one is a photographer) were medical anthropology students at Berkeley. Their field notes are strangely poetic but not in the typical bullshit romanticizing fashion. As a medical professional, I suspect you'll enjoy their reflections.
drugs are degenerate. the only pill I take is the red pill
