Because I get far more enjoyment from reading interesting books than plaing vidya and watching movies, sure, reading and working on improving yourself is harder than getting instant gratification, but when you've invested a decent amount of time the satisfaction and fun you can reach is far beyond any passive consumption of mind numbing media can reach.

Mindless consumption and laziness makes me feel guilty. A day spent in productive effort leaves me with a feeling of satisfaction with my self. I can't forcefully lower my expectations for what makes me feel that time was well spent.

When you've read enough you realize reading is its own form of binging and most people consume it that way. You need focused purposeful reading with a goal in mind or you end up with those people on goodreads who have read 1000+ books and have nothing meaningful to say about any of them.
