hey /lit/, i recently bought pic related and well, what am i in for? is it good like the reviews are saying it is? i read very little to not spoil what the story is but i read it covers deep philosophical questions. They said it was the best book ever written. does /lit/ agree or did i get memed on?

>is it good like a lot of reviews by people with subjective opinions say, or will someone else's arbitrary subjective opinion differ? because one anonymous person's subjective opinion on an anime image board will outweigh over 100 years of admiration from the best writers and scholars ever
>>
>>9885267
just read it. it's well worth it
>>
>>9885272
my dude, i read random ass good read reviews and the Wikipedia page on what it's about. The small paragraph on what it's about seemed interesting so i got it.

Im not going to read what other directors say about a fucking movie when i could just ask a friend, get muh drift?

>>9885274
thanks man, was just deciding to read this or an autobiography, but i think ill start with this.
>>
>>9885267

Yes, it's a very meaningful book, but it's also very hilarious and entertaining. Expect a good time with some wacky characters.
>>
>>9885267
Yep, best book ever written. Literature doesn't get better than TBK. You might as well quit reading once you finish it cause it's all downhill from there.

It is Dostoevsky's most complete work, but not my personal favorite. You are doing yourself a massive disservice if you don't research the thoughts of the era before reading it. Become familiar with the Materialist shift, Socialism and orthodox theology at least. Without this background Ivan and Masimov (?) don't have the weight they should because you have no context.
>>
I finished Crime and Punishment, and want to read more from Dostoevsky, is this a good place to go to next, or Notes from the Underground?
>>
>>9885267
It's a near perfect book as >>9885368
gets on but it definetely isn't the 'end of literature' or anything similar. I always enjoy these large late 19th century Russian novels because they become almost canonical examples of "novels" and will sort of be a microcosm of the form as a whole.

>>9885388
It might be worth getting into some of the underpinnings but not absolutely essential imo. Do some basic research on what Russia was like in the time frame and know the connotations associated with 'sensationalism'

>>9885452
you should be fine
>>
>>9885388
>research the thoughts of the era
how do I even begin to do this? by thoughts you mean just the major questions of the time right? philosophical thoughts?

>Become familiar with the Materialist shift, Socialism and orthodox theology at least.
can be done with just like an hour of looking r-right? i really want to dive into it already.

>>9885593
>underpinnings
does this mean what >>9885388 this anon was recommending?

Im asking a shit ton of questions because this is the first book im reading that isn't Greek literature and im excited now but having to know all these ism's and shifts and stuff is a bummer man, is it really that necessary to know all of that stuff to understand the beauty of the book? I mean i don't want to miss out because i didn't so i will if i have to.

Is it sort of like
>if you don't know who the gods are of the illiad you won't get the story anon
?
>>
>>9885638
just pick it up anon, read slowly until you get that perfect pace down and try your best to stick to it. If you can log in a couple hours every day you'll be done in a couple of weeks. You can get all the research you need done before in about an hour desu (okay not ALL the context but enough to have a good time and get 90% of the stories main points)

Notes
>>
It was boring as fuck
>>
>>9885944
the only bit that I found long winded was the speech at Mitya's trial
>>
Lots of Bible references.
>>
Listen to the Hubert Dreyfus lectures, existentialism in lit and movie, along side. It takes time, but will pay of greatly, especially if you're not familiar with the context. Srsly, not only you will get more out of the book itself, it will help you with literally any other book in the western Canon.
>>
Loved it. Read it right after Crime and Punishment and had to stop reading for a while just to digest it all. Probably the best novel I've ever read.
>>
If you're an young adult you'll probably enjoy it. If you aren't, you're just going to waste your time reading a novel made to ease the suffering of an author coping with the loss of his two sons; and made to attack his rivals in subtle references. TBK is the only standing pillar of the old pretentious /lit/. I hope it falls so we can all stop circle-jerking novels who's main target audience were stay-at-home housewives and commence to enjoy poetry.
