Which languages (other than English) are the most widely represented in the canon?

Which language should i learn if a large part of my purpose in learning it is to be able to read beautiful transcendent literature untranslated? What would be the most useful

I'm sure latin and greek are both safe, but I'd like to learn Russian or german or something.
