What do you think about The Odyssey?
Just began reading it, I think it's absolutely mesmerizing

Have you read the Iliad? I'm not liking it at all at the moment and am wondering if I'll bother reading the Odyssey afterwards.

Odyssey is a lot more fun to read than Illiad honestly. You're not a bored Greek king wanting a feel good story about ancient family feats afer all.

How far are you into it? The Iliad is amazing but the first few chapters/books test people's patience.

I'll give it a go. I want to read Ulysses properly so I'll have to at least have read the Odyssey first. Apologies for derailing your thread slightly.

I've read the first 13 books. It picked up a bit admittedly after the first few and I'm going to finish it but I'm not finding it as entertaining as I was expecting.

Odyssey is amazing.
My Fagles post-script describes the Iliad as a shining glorious light, with the Odyssey as a story told around the campfire at dusk.
The primary themes are of family and home, especially as evidenced in the dinner scene at the end of the tale, with Laertes, Odysseus, and Telemachus eating dinner together. Great stuff.
