I don't know much about philosophy. What has been written on cruelty?

But from what I read, the topics he addresses are more about society as whole, and the cruelty he talks about is mainly socially induced (race) or based on willing ignorance (animals).
I'm more interested in the individual level, and how people revel in cruelty even without it having practical uses like feeding oneself.
