Can someone please explain to me why this is considered a great novel? Just finished it and wow what a disappointment.

It isn't. He' a hack, his themes are essentially those of an 18-year-old navel gazing pothead, and for this reason he's celebrated in dumb dumb America.

I don't care for any of DFWs work, but can you imagine being such an insecure twat that you tear into someone on twitter after they're dead? How jealous. Usually I adhere to "the author is not the work," but his irredeemable character nullifies anything he's contributed to the craft.

It's famous for being edgy, kind of like 'Catcher in the Rye'.

I used to think books were better than the movies.

This is the counter example I use now

Damn I love this book.

It's not a great novel, it's just a well-marketed product.

Gay, so must have good taste, the author.

It's a meme, not a great novel. I'm not saying it's terrible, mind you.
Anybody read all of his books? What's your favorite?

It's one of the worst books I've ever read. Complete waste of time.

also 'Where the Red Fern Grows'

I really despised the first 100 pages or so, I was about to quit reading it.

Eventually, I dunno, something just clicked and I got into it. I definitely think it's a masterpiece , some of the descriptions of the killing reaches a bizarre pornographic level of violence. Some of the killings are weirdly erotic, and indistinguishable from the the actual pornographic parts.

The overall story is a little bit unfocused and spread out, the movie actually did a good job to focus it more. But I really like the som'bitch.

I definitely appreciate certain chapters here and there, but overall it just feels like there isn't any meaningful plot. The book starts off with portraying him as one of the wall street yuppies and then slowly adds in his insanity and sexual deviance and killings more and more and then the "climax" would be when he kills a bunch of people in the street and then hides in his office and confesses it all over the answering machine to his lawyer who then acts like it was a joke or something? And then it's done. Wtf

Never saw the movie, but I can't imagine it's better than the book.

The film is worth watching, partly because Bale is really quite funny in it and because a combination of his performance and the complete absurdity of his violent rampage and the aftermath make it unclear as to whether any of it happened at all and he got away with it because of the absurd and shallow society in which he lives or if the scenes of violence were nothing more than a delusional fantasy in response to Bateman's dissatisfaction with said shallow company.

Of course, Ellis will tell you what happened in the book really happened and that there was no delusion, but as we all know, a film adaptation is not the same thing as a book, and the added ambiguity and comic surrealism of the film actually make it work where the book fails to be as interesting.

desu it was much better than I was expecting and much more violent.
I think it did a good job of depicting the anxiety and psychopathy of Bateman (as well as its growth), his autism made me laugh a lot. the surrealism is interesting

the movie is very good in its own way, Christian Bale does a fantastic job
