Hello, /lit/. I'm interested in reading Don Quixote so which translation would be the best for a first time read? My local book store has one from Smollett, a penguin classics, and Grossman. Thanks.

Might as well just read the wiki summary

It depends on whether you favor accuracy or beauty
The Penguin Classics is John Rutherford, which my Quixote professor taught and highly recommended as a great translation. So that.
I had a good time with Burton Raffel, he does a good job of explaining any jokes or sayings that don't make the translation jump. I've also read bits of Putnam which were fine. Some swear by Grossman which I haven't read, but it suspect that's more to do with how it's the most available copy out there.
Grab the Penguin if you're looking for cheap with good humor and Grossman if you want some useful footnotes. Neither should really hinder of benefit you in any way as with most translations
