What's the /lit/ opinion on revisions?
Do they potentially threaten the ideal of a standalone work since the author may no longer hold the same values?

I've never read King, never will. What kind of revisions are you talking about? Is King pulling a Rowling and actively seeking to change the main character's ethnicity for the movie? If so, then it shouldn't surprising to you. King just writes detailed movie scripts.

He did the revisions decades ago and it wasn't anything major. He just made some changes to the first book so it fit into the later novels more easily.

It had to be done to fit into the saga as it evolved. But the first book is better as a surreal, poetic sort of dream journey than as the first installment of a story with a very different tone.
