OP here. I forgot to say that I'm reading guns germs and steel on my phone on my commute. It's pretty boring. I don' think the author is doing anything wrong in how he is presenting things. But this book is designed for reference. It is not written to be read. It is pretty much what I disdain about non fiction when I'm told I should read it.
