How do you guys talk about literature without feeling super pretentious? I have no problem talking about philosophy and math with other people, if they're educated and not stoner "philosophers" etc. but whenever I talk about literature, I feel an intense self-loathing because of how pretentious it all seemed. All the themes in literature seem to be things that should not be discussed, that do not benefit at all from this back and forth, but should remain on the page. How can you possibly talk about, say, the psychological insights of Proust or Joyce without totally oversimplifying and hand waving it all? These are things that I think can only be shown, that cannot be talked about, theorized about.
it means you dont know enough about it to talk without sounding pretentious.

Nah. I guarantee I know more than you do, and probably have a bigger dick too. Sure, you can talk about trivial things, like literary history, and different poetic forms, and influences, and biographical details, and shit like that. But try to have a conversation about "consciousness" in Finnegans Wake, without feeling ridiculously pretentious. There's a reason that these things have to be written into novels: if we could just talk about them easily, then there would be no reason to do so. Nah, these things have to be shown through an artistic medium, not reduced to trivial conversations between people
I hang out with people who are steeped in arts/humanities so I dont have this problem.
Even then I just speak in a way thats not overwhelming to the unitiated, and encourage them to check it out.

In my experience this worry usually comes from your parents being scumbags who always laughed at how dumb you are.
My parents always thought I was super smart so I don't have this issue, I think there might be no getting around it.
