Honestly thought I always assumed that it was going to be some post modernist pynchon esque novel at first, i'm pleasantly surprised.

It's actually pretty easy to follow.
I would equate the prose to that of Maze Runner or any other contemporary young adult novel (although I think Cline meant for an older audience to read it).
