Finishing up a 7-8k word story. Hoping to have editing done in time for winter submissions.
Coincidentally I also finished a chapter today
I went to my writing group today and did several hours of work fleshing out my characters. I still need a better hook for plot A which is a macguffin quest--solid but I want to make waves with this book.
I don't write as much as I'd like to. I'm more interested in musical lyric writing than prose though.
What's it like to write and work on an actual novel? My trouble is creating themes and expressing what I want to say authentically and concisely. What do?

I've written a few novel-length works by this point, and the things you need above normal writer skills are persistence and patience. It's a long project to write a novel. You're not going to get it done in a few days or even a few weeks, like a short story. You need to be able to keep at it slowly but surely. It takes a certain level of devotion.
I've only written one story for a contest back in high school. I didn't win but got some consolation money, but the judges told me they all cried while reading it, that the race was tight. I was proud of my work at the time but now look at it with disgust. If any anon is kind enough to offer me their opinion, i want to email it to someone. it would really help my writing career (lack thereof) to know what my strengths are.
Please drop an email if interested, it's not very long, less than 3000 words I think.
