It definitely helps build focus and discipline for writing, as well as learning what makes one author's style tick. One thing to watch for is copying blindly. You want to absorb every sentence and word to its full meaning as you go, with that focus the copywork will be more beneficial instead of just mindless transcription.

I've only done it for short stories and poetry so far, or else snippets from a novel.
