I just finished reading The Stand, and I liked it a lot. I also read the Dark Tower series a year ago, and liked the first three books a lot (especially the second one).

Are there other authors / books similar to those two that are shorter?

swan song by robert mccammon is really good if you liked the stand, there's a lot taken from king but it goes its own way fairly quickly.
