What's the deal with this guy? He gets a lot of praise from the press for his "beautiful prose."
What is /lit/'s opinion on his prose and novels?

He is big in D&D circles becuase he works with and is promoted by WotC.

I thought Rick Rubin made records.
He writes fun page-turners with no literary merit. "Beautiful prose" means "I didn't have to reread many sentences." He's everything you could ask of genre and nothing more.

Readers of genre fiction are not used to what they read being "crafted" in any way. Rothfuss makes poor use of basic literary devices, like similes, and basic structural tools, like subordinate clauses, that they aren't familiar with, and their reaction to this is to call it "beautiful prose." Of course he botches all this and sounds like a neckbeard in a writer's workshop, but genre readers literally don't know any better because they don't fucking read.

i think he had a few decent ideas in his novels regarding world-building aspects. but he inevitably shit the bed with everything involving the chandrian and the mythology of the books.
he is worse than martin. martin wrote himself into a corner and this guy can't even finish a fucking magic school anime

fuck im tired that first sentence didn't make any sense

rothfuss is a great writer in the sense that he understands that a lot of fantasy writing is about male weakness in some way
