where to start with Gaddis? Thinking about Frolic or Agape. Frolic because I used to work in law and Agape because it's short. Sell me though

Skip The Recognitions.
No book needs to be that long.
Agape should be read last. It's referenced in earlier works and represents the capstone of his pessimism. If you read it before seeing his descent into absolute darkness, it loses a lot of its effect.
The best order for his books is chronological. (Recognitions -> JR -> Carpenter's Gothic -> Frolic -> Agape). If you really want to read Frolic, there's nothing so complex as to stop you from jumping right in, but imo I really like how in a lot of ways it mirrors JR and expands some of the legal issues in Carpenter's Gothic. Also, if you work in law, it might just hit too close to home to be enjoyable, though I'm sure there's a lot of cool references only lawyers would get. But I have read seen a few different people who work in the legal field say that it's just too uncomfortable for them since by the end of the book he makes a pretty good case for why the law is a sham. But idk, this might make it even funnier for you.

This guy couldn't be more wrong. Plus, as a general rule, you should pretty much always read an author chronologically
