Having read both Evola and Guenon, it's now beyond question to me that Bannon's just an idiot. Evola is 100% pointless, and Guenon is only very mildly interesting. The media is locked into a death spiral. It deserves the crash that's coming, but it's not a positive development for the country. A healthy and honest fourth estate has a positive role to play in the polity; hence the First Amendment is consistent with sentiments like Jefferson's “The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.”

It wouldn't surprise me, and it wouldn't be unhealthy, I think, if we ditched the supposedly neutral and objective news reporting paradigm of the past 50 odd years, which was mostly a lie anyway, and went back to the openly partisan style of 19th century journalism.

True, but the point I was trying to make is that the media mostly still holds on to the pretense of being neutral and objective. In the 19th century, newspapers openly aligned with one party or another; there was no pretense of neutrality. That's not the practice today.

I would love to see the law that permitted and gave impetus to this consolidation struck down. It was a terrible development that's bad for democracy.

Again, it happened, but the media *entirely* held on to its neutrality pretense during the Obama era, and has not really abandoned that pretense in the current year other than to argue that Trump is a special case who doesn't *deserve* neutrality.

The Thomas Frank Guardian piece is one of the very, very few such pieces by a mainstream journalist that actually acknowledges the current highly partisan and blinkered state of journalism. Virtually no other mainstream journalist is talking about these things. If memory serves, Frank wrote a similar piece for Harpers about six months ago.* No other mainstream journalist is writing these sorts of articles.
