What is /lit/'s thoughts on fanfiction? Is it possible to be done tastefully or is it nothing but a means of wish fulfillment?

I doubt this. The most notable fan fiction writer to break into the mainstream was the woman who wrote 50 Shades of Grey. I don't think fan fiction even produces quality genre fiction.
