I'm worried I'm becoming more and more like Diogenes each day.

I was taking an overnight trip the other day, and after pulling in for breakfast early in the morning I was confronted with how low I'd sunken as an animal. The waitress took my order, four scrambled eggs, a plate of hash browns, two pancakes, bacon, juice, and coffee. At the time I hadn't eaten at a restaurant in nearly a year, not due to any social anxiety or stressors, but because I prefer to prepare my own meals at home for convenience and health. Maybe it was this that led me to eat with my hands, scooping great fistfuls of eggs into my mouth, head ducking toward the plate like a grotesque saurian, or to pour the juice and coffee into the same glass and chug the mixture with such rapidity that it ran down my cheeks and neck. I didn't even realize what I'd been doing until the family next to me got up to leave, plates in hand, to relocate themselves to some far-off corner of the diner. Even then I felt no shame, was not struck by the magnitude of my crime, until well after I'd already left, ruin in my wake.
