What do you think about this book? I enjoyed other works by Kundera

I honestly think the movie was a lot better. The book reads too much like some silly philosophical essay.

I think it's probably the worst book I've ever read. Character development made me angry, I'm not sure if he wanted them to sound interesting or smart, but I just thought every action they did was dumb.

I normally don't let a book unfinished. This one I quited when I was almost at half, and sold the book to a used books store for 0,2€

Only book of his I read, and I enjoyed it for its simplicity within a complex historical moment. The point of the intellect within the confines of a subtly oppressive regime may be lost to some. The possibility of decadence and irreverence doesn't seem to be held as much of a rebellion against anything anymore, considering how pervasive capitalism is, swallowing sidesteps into trending demographics. I think, even if it's not that long ago, it needs to be read in historical context to still seem to hold weight. Otherwise it's just posturing towards some vague French ideal of the novel, or what Bolano ate for breakfast.
