I'm currently reading Max Havelaar and I'm wondering what Indonesian and Dutch people are thinking about this book.
Do you agree with what's written in there?
Was it a good read?
Or just say anything you like about it
I correct myself; I'm also wondering what other people are thinking about it, not just Indonesian and Dutch

It's a shit book God bless the King-Emperor and fuck Multatuli
Suffocate on coffee and disappear
Multatuli was a hack
read Nescio instead

I found the book quite boring, it's essentially a pamflet about how people in the colonies are being treated unfair but it's stretched out over 300 pages or something.
It's also a book most people have been forced to read in high school for dutch, so you don't have good memories about it. The writer also wrote no other books of note, whereas Nescio as the other guy recommended is from the same era and wrote very good books such as "Titaantjes" and "De Uitvreter".
If you want to read Dutch literature, why would you pick this book?

Can you tell me about De Uitvreter? I've been meaning to read that for a while.

It's a great book in Dutch, but i don't think it translates well. It's more ore less about two young guys against the world and one Uitvreter, someone who lets everybody else pay for his stuff, and the other two ultimately join regular society and the Uitvreter kills himself.
(I only read Max Havelaar in high school, so take my opinion for what you will)
It wasn't that good of a book. It might have been relevant as a political piece at the time but outside of that I don't see what makes it special. I wouldn't call it a classic.
De Heren van de Thee by Haasse and Stille Kracht by Couperus are both better books set in colonial indonesia

My dude, Nescio is one of the greats
