I'd like to get into film. What are good books about cinema and its history?

skip books until you want to learn specific details. for orientation and general 'redpilling' use youtube:

a little more technical than formal, but good overview over film history:

also I'd like to mention that there are a lot of aspects to get into in cinema. you can start reading classic scripts like pulp fiction, you can get into photography to appreciate camera stuff, you can study editing and fap to satoshi kon, etc etc.
Glad I found this interesting thread.

Books won't help you. Going into the medium, you need to see the medium in real time, while someone breaks it down. You need to be able to see what they mean.
I dont think books are necessary to understand film. I would recommend you to start with the most known prolific directors Kubrick, Hitchcock, Scorcese etc and then slowly move to independent, foreign and pre WW2 cinema.
Any o you guys read bazin's what is cinema? Been meaning to get around to that one.
Good picks everyone.
