Starting from Marxism, or perhaps a little bit such as of accounts of the social disposition regarding government and economy of the time, and through the 1950s to the revelations of Stalin's purges and the fall of communism: what are a series of essential texts one could read to acquire a thorough breadth of knowledge for understanding this part of history?

I can't tell if this is sarcastic or not

I already have the Gulag Archipelago as well as a couple other of Peterson's recommendations: Orindary Men, and The Road to Wigan Pier.
>>
>>9752533
Actually I meant to say I have those on a "to-order" list. I'm trying to compile a series of books in the mean time while I finish reading some of the others I received this month, although not related to this subject.

>One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
I'd like to keep it non-fiction, frankly. There's no pummeling leftist ideologues with made up stories that don't serve as a tangible precedent for anything in the arena of discourse.

Have you tried Hitler yet?

What's the point? Germany wasn't communist, and academia isn't riddle with National Socialists. His seething diatribes about Jews are only relevant insofar as the fact that the Bolsheviks were kikes themselves.

So it is something he dives into in Mein Kampf? I was vaguely entertaining the idea of getting that a couple weeks ago.

Main Currents of Marxism by Leszek Kolakowski is THE text to read on the trajectory of Marxism and its adherents.

>they maintain that the concept of a society's 'ripeness' for revolution is a bourgeois deceit
No one says this. The potential for revolution is directly linked to how bad the condition of the capitalist economy has gotten. I assume the rest of that wall of text is equally braindead.
>>
>>9752744

It's about a braindead ideology, of course it's braindead.

>mfw people think the nuclear family is the family unit as a whole even though it was developed under capitalism

No. The *basic* social unit for *most* societies has been the pair-bonded couple and their children. The extent to which kin and other relations are integrated in their daily lives is highly variable, but that doesn't change the underlying unit.

Read this, a history of the rise and fall of the Workers Movement from a left communist perspective.

imo Reich, Marcuse and the whole sexual liberation crowd represent one of the worst mistakes of the western left. Sexuality isn't inherently revolutionary and in fact is one of the most dangerous things to commodify
>>
>>9752895
I'm not so fond of "a leftists perspective". The modern left tend to ignore the betrayals of human dignity that all socialist/communist states have created while still clutching onto the idea that nationally-modeled communist government is still possible, somehow, somewhere, some way.

I want a leftist perspective insofar as it is the every day, common man, living before the atrocity, and DURING the atrocity, but with great emphasis on the collusions of factors that thrown into a mixing pot created the entire atrocity; nitty-gritty details of the famines, civil unrest, mass executions, and fallouts of the respective governments at the times.

Correct me if I'm wrong in assuming the link your posted may just be some rosy-cheeked, naive pseudo-glorification of "what communism could've been, this isn't REAL communism". I just don't have the time to read it before work (t. minus 10 mins).

>>9752709
I'll look it up when I have a moment.
