Are you guys (Americans) taught about the definiton of concepts such as: character development, plothole, plot device, etc. in school? I ask because most english-speaking people I have talked to are aware of them while nobody in my country (even people who read) seem to know their meaning. Sorry for my bad English.

Spain. We study our history of literature, the literary genres and so on but we never get into literary devices for some reason.

(Euro here) Character development and plotholes are anglo memes, but literally everyone knows about literary devices. Metaphor, hyperbole, onomatopoeia... Right?
