How can we trust God? What if he is actually lying to us through angels/prophets?

The Bible should be titled "The Metaphor" so people like you wouldn't exist.

The ultimate gift of free will
I have to read the western canon first, then I have to read the eastern canon, then I have to read the detective novel canon, then I have to read the Quran, then I have to read all of Western philosophy, then I have to read all of the introductions to Western philosophy, then I have to read some texts on mathematics, then I have to read all of psychoanalysis, then I have to read all of musical analysis, then I have to read all of painting analysis, then I have to read all of literary analysis, then I have to read all of literary criticism, then I have to read all of anti-literature, then I have to read all of anti-philosophy, and when I'm done reading all of that I may read your shitty book

You don't trust God, you merely accept every single one of His whims.

It's not a metaphor son, it's mythology.

Because He wants it to.

OP is right though, it is possibly the most influential.
I don't particularly like the New Testament, it's kinda uneventful but oh boy oh me the shit that goes on in the old stuff is really good. I feel like it could be so much better though, several of the books rejected at the Council of Nicaea is great. Cutting the giants out of the plot, what were they thinking? Or rejecting some of those childhood gospels was also a mistake, but that's just me.

Hitchens didn't know that the shepherds were also a part of the flock, or that humans do work and die.

What about the people born with mental problems? Where is their free will?

Mythology can be tailored by any tailor. Metaphor is purely what is to be taken from the events depicted regardless of historical accuracy. No need to believe to a T when the same conclusions can be made through its ambiguity.
