Is anyone else really bothered by the child orgy scene in this book? What's the reason for it? All I can imagine is S.K wanking off while he was writing it.

No. It's just words on a page and if you can somehow find it in yourself to move past the fact that children are fucking (as they sometimes do) you will see that it makes sense in the context of the story.
It's obviously a nod to the razing of Belarus.

I didn't even know there was one until I read people talking about it. At that point the book had started going to shot so I just skipped to all the interesting bits to get it over with.
It'd be cool if the movie included it, like totally filmed cp with pop shots and all that. Then the film makers are all like, "What? Problem?"

There's a whole new layer of interpretation coming from the orgy scene (and King is pretty clear about it, since he writes about the word "it" being used as an euphemism of sexual intercourse in the context of the scene).
Because of the orgy scene, you can also read "It" as a parable about the developement of childhood sexuality: from children looking at sex as something weird, disgusting, terrible to teenagers who lose the fear of sexuality, start to get curious about it and finally practicing it.
But I always wonder why it wasn't censored myself.
