Of Mice and Men is a high school favourite (or at least it is here in the UK, I imagine being American it probably is over there as well), and I feel it's a good way to teach kids about the history of racism. You can explain why the word is there, and it's proper context, and yet because the book has an anti racist message you can do a lesson on Crooks and be confident the book is doing them good rather than harm.

One time in high school, i got to read a poem written by a black person, so i read it in an stereotypical black voice (not african-american, more lke caribbean). Everybody laughed, including the teacher.
Now that i think about it, it was incredibly racist, but it was all in good fun. There wasn't a single black student in the classroom, so i don't think i offended anyone.
My country is (or was) quite racist. Blacks were often protrayed in media in a very stereotypical manner, and being the target of racist jokes.
