He's not as good as normies makes it out to be. His stories seem incomplete, his characters are sometimes good, but most times bad and the only ideas that he tries to pass in his books are all about loneliness and when he tries to deviate from that subject and tackle another one, it feels very simplistic.
Try reading Kafka on the Shore and Norwegian Wood, they're the most close his books can get to what I would call good. Don't even bother with Tsukuru Tazaki, 1Q84 and Sputnik Sweetheart.

wait, sputnik sweetheart is good. better than kafka on the shore

Murakami's novels feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.
I like After the Quake and The Elephant Vanishes, but - and I say this having only read Kafka on the Shore and Norwegian Wood - it feels like he has only ever has enough material for a decent short story.

Kafka on the Shore and Wind Up Bird if you're into magic realism, Norwegian Wood if you're not.
