Roadside Picnic is cool and creepy but i'm not sure if it had many direct descriptions, it was more psychological stuff and your mind filling up the gaps as far as i remember

Yeah, sometimes I wonder if descriptions aren't that important to get right. On one hand I'd say using illustrations would be a good thing, but on the other I think it'd be breaking the flow of the prose for little gain, you know?

one alien in Solaris, and it's a friggin' ocean. that won't help OP describe aliens unless they're made of water.
