What should one read before trying to read Merleau-Ponty? From what I've heard he isn't "super hard" but I still feel there's probably something one should be familiar with before reading him, and I don't mean the greeks or other obvious "philosophy essentials".

you probably want to go in without reading anything else. the background reading is >>9663046 and he's much harder to get through or even find in bookstores than MP.
you can definitely read phenomenology of perception and have fun without background reading. it opens a bit like a calvino book, and sounds like an enthusiastic nerd friend talking to you about neat shit throughout. on the other hand, i've seen husserl make grown men cry trying to understand it. if you're not doing a full history or in depth study, skip husserl.
