Was Sancho a bad or good friend for enabling Don to do all the crazy shit he was pulling and favourite stories? Mine are a tie between the Sierra Morena adventures or when they are in the cave.

Sancho was the best friend anyone could have. Stuck with Don through thick and thin. My favourite part of the book was when Sancho took a shit while standing right next to Don Quixote (because he was too scared to move away from ). I had tears from laughing.
Has someone been reading Kafuka?

In all seriousness I've never considered this because I can't even imagine it being defensible to have prevented Don Quixote from doing what he wanted to do. His "friends" and family tried and failed to hold him back until the very end of book two, and what happened? It literally killed the guy to be stuck at home in bed. It did damage that dozens of dumbass adventures and beatdowns were never able to do.
This was one of the first "real" books I ever read, and I'm sure my consideration of it was (and, since I haven't reread it, still is) very limited and elementary, but the one thing that stuck with me in the ~3 years since I read it is how important it is to make your own way in spite of "risks" and the warnings of friends who "know what's good for you." So I think Sancho was not only a good friend, but probably the only good friend Quixote ever really had. Yeah he got them into trouble and enabled him--but enabled him to do what? To be himself, to live his dreams. How could you ever be a better friend than that? At risk of being trite, he's the "why not?" friend I think we'd all like to find among a sea of "why?" """friends""" who can't know what's good for us because they don't really know us, and don't actually really care about us. Sancho is the "fuck it, do it, see what happens" friend who makes life fun.
