I haven't seen the movie, but I did like the book. If it doesn't have to monsters, exactly,
The Temeraire series by Novak and Dragonriders of Pern by McCaffrey are good dragon books. Bangkok 8 by Burdett is sort of gritty cop story, and sometimes there's a ghost just there. I actually really like one. Sick City is another gritty city story, no monsters tho.
There's Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell, but I haven't read that.
